urban regeneration
in montalcino
montalcino (si)2012
The project for the development and revival of tourism in the city of Montalcino is based mainly on the enhancement of the cultural and building heritage. The urban feasibility study, which also included the restoration of the church of Saint Augustine, started with the analysis of the critical issues that prevent the main city in the area, where one of the best wines in the world is produced, from becoming a tourist attraction. The project envisages the city not as a set of different “functional systems”, but as a whole made up of endless overlapping functions, including functions that conflict with each other.

In order to trigger new ways of thinking about urban planning, investments should be made in areas involving people of different ages, generations, cultures, professions, trades, skills in agriculture, craftsmanship, art, tourism, personal services, self-consumption and self-market.

Our aim was to plan a series of activities for reusing this huge grey and monolithic building, which apparently was unsuitable for any purpose, so as to make it a part of the lives of the citizens of Montalcino and therefore also of the tourists.

The objective is to create a seamless connection between the inside and the outside made efficient by analysing and redesigning the road system and establishing a brave and rigorous hierarchy that triggers new and virtuous behaviours, as well as to think of original functions necessary for a different growth by creating new spaces that are not available elsewhere in the city.
