roof for the archaeological
excavation site
of saint martha
cinigiano (gr)2018
Although the archaeological site of Saint Martha has not been registered at the land registry and is not subject to any preservation regulations, it is bringing to light finds of exceptional historical and archaeological value on a national and international level. Therefore, the clients wish to enhance the site with contributions from the Bertarelli Foundation. The main objective of the project is to protect the archaeological excavation and research site and to preserve it by building a light roof that fits the site without encumbering the excavation area.

Balance, lightness and simplicity are the adjectives that best describe these thin-shell structures. However, thin-shell structures are also characterized by strength, rigidity, rationality and an informed choice of the construction techniques and the material properties. They have sinuous shapes and can cover larger areas, while ensuring a high spatial flexibility and a very low visual impact through an accurate modelling in accord with the contour lines of the countryside. In addition, the pulp-coloured material has the same colour as the ground, so that it blends in with its organic shape.

Near the thicket, the shell will also be partially covered with autochthonous climber plants. The shape has been designed to provide easy entry and exit for visitors through non-invasive paths, so that archaeologists can work undisturbed. Particular attention has been paid to the distribution of the loads with respect to the archaeological site, and to the drainage system, in order to avoid rainwater from flowing into the excavation site.
