crucifix for the missionaries
of the company of mary
lima (peru)2012
Mark asked me to think of a large crucifix for the parish in Huaycan which would remind them of their work in Peru.
I knew of the “mission” of these people from Bergamo who for a few years had been working for free, from December to February, as master builders, carpenters, bricklayers and craftsmen for the sheer pleasure of helping others in the name of faith.

Seven metres high. A cross. A Crucifix stripped of flesh in Passion, while doubting people go towards it like ants to seek faith in the midst of earthly works.

I immediately thought of a cross and a Christ created by their hands with the simplest materials of their trade. Iron rods of different diameters used daily as a framework for concrete.

A Crucifix where the cross and the man can be distinguished only from a close distance. A body made of iron rods supported by heavier pillar bars. A sign in space, where wind and dust pass through.

The structure, which was designed together with engineer Marco Verdina, withstands gusts of wind up to 140 km/h.
